Legoland Discovery Centre is not a big project for Byldis, but it is a special one. Something different for a change! We produced special rounded elements for Legoland, for which special moulds were developed.
Legoland Discovery Centre in Scheveningen is an indoor Lego playground, situated on the Middenboulevard. The Legoland Discovery Centre building, with a commercial pavilion above, has replaced the former Vitalizee which was demolished to make place for a 3000 square metre basement for the LLDC.
2. Byldis contribution to this project
For this project, Byldis produced the precast piers on the ground floor and the partially rounded precast facade edging on the first floor of both the LLDC and the commercial spaces. A coloured aggregate was added to the prefabricated elements.
3. Why was Byldis chosen?
The commissioning body explicitly asked for sun-yellow coloured concrete elements. They already had a sample tile, which Byldis copied.
A tight schedule also meant that it was very important that the building was completed in time. Our precast concrete system meant that we were able to deliver the elements very quickly. The speed of construction was therefore significantly faster than with traditional methods. Byldis also met all expected quality requirements.
“It was perfect, how you supplied the elements.”
Architect Filip Mens
4. Challenges & solutions
Colour aggregate In order to achieve the perfect colour for the concrete elements, as initially designed by the architect, we carried out a 'colour analysis' before starting.
Special mould The special shape of the elements is thanks to the mould that was specially developed. The elements actually have rounded facade edges, which were created using the specially designed mould. The rounded shape of different elements demanded precision. The elements had to be closely matched and fit together perfectly.
Transparency An aluminium curtain wall was included between the columns, in order to safeguard an optimal transparency.
